Pension of 110-year-old woman with no Aadhaar to be restored in Karnataka

A 110-year-old woman, whose old-age pension had stopped as she did not have an Aadhaar card, has now been promised help from the government. She was also deprived of groceries from the local fair price shop and her name was deleted from voters' list.

Revenue officials in Bidar district visited Lakshmibai Mahapure at her doorstep in Kapalapur village, Bhalki, on Saturday and promised that all benefits would reach her.

According to her younger son Dashrath Mahapure, who is taking care of her, Lakshmibai used to get all benefits till she turned 100. "For five years I visited government offices several times but in vain," he added.

It was only after revenue department officials went to Lakshmibai's house that she started smiling and thanked the department officials for reaching out to her.

Bidar deputy commissioner Govind Reddy told TOI: "She will first get her Aadhaar card within a week. Her bank account, which had been de-activated due to lack of transactions, will also be activated."

Lakshmibai lost her husband years ago. She has four sons and a daughter along with 25 grandchildren and great grandchildren.
