'Longest in history of the world': Karnataka forms record 2,500-km-long human chain to mark 'International Day of Democracy'

NEW DELHI: Karnataka marked the 'International Day of Democracy' on Sunday with a 2,500-km-long human chain, aiming to symbolize equality, unity, fraternity, and participative governance.

The event spanned the state from Bidar in the north to Chamarajanagar in the south, covering all 31 districts.

The Karnataka government organized the event with civil society's help. Chief minister Siddaramaiah participated at the main event in front of Vidhana Soudha in Bengaluru, along with senior ministers and officials.

The CM led by reading the Constitution's preamble, followed by people from various walks of life, including transgenders and differently-abled individuals, joining to form the chain.

Events were mirrored in all districts, with ministers, public representatives, and senior officials all joining.

Officials stated, "A world record verifying team from London will arrive for the innovative and massive event." They expect the human chain to be the "longest in the history of the world," stretching approximately 2,500 km long, with 25 lakh participants in total. Each kilometer would have around 1,000 participants on average.

Additionally, 10 lakh saplings are expected to be planted by participants during the event. Certificates will be given to those taking part.

Last year, the government had organized a similar event to read the Constitution's preamble for the 'International Day of Democracy,' which has been observed globally since 2007, following the United Nations' proclamation.
