mangalore: chief minister s m krishnaon saturday strongly felt the need for creating an atmosphere to facilitateinfinite love in our march towards a value-based society. he was speaking afterpresenting the annual sandesha awards instituted by the sandesha foundation forculture and education at a function held in the sandesha premises in the city.acknowledging the contribution of christian missionaries to the development ofkannada language, culture and education, krishna said more such institutionswere needed to work sincerely for the promotion of cultural unification of themasses in the present communal strife-ridden, hatred and jealousy-drivensociety. he lauded the efforts of the sandesha and other similar organisationsfor achieving the said objectives. ``the growth of culture and literature waspossible when the achievers in different fields are recognised and respected,''''krishna said and added that such award ceremonies would inspire the young, whilethe awardees would strive harder to achiever greater goals. the function wouldbe presided over by bishop of mangalore diocese rev. dr aloysius paul d''souza.felicitating the awardees, former chief minister veerappa moily urged the stategovernment to extend a helping hand to the organisations that were genuinelyinvolved in promoting culture and education. while minister for ports andfisheries b. ramanath rai launched the sandesha website, chairman ofjanamadhyama prakashana ltd. ronald colaco released a documentary on theinstitution. mla n. yogish bhat, deputy commissioner a.k. monnappa, regionalofficer of the indian council for cultural relations j.w. lobo, mp vinaykumarsorake were present. the award presentation ceremony was held in tune with thecultural ethos of the region as the awardees came forward to be seated in aspecially designed chair as the chief minister honoured them with a shawl, amemento, cash prize and a certificate. while the sandesha literature award(kannada) was conferred on former bureaucrat and expert in folk literature drh.l. nage gowda, the award for konkani literature was conferred on j.c. viegasfrom mysore. dr u.p. upadhyaya from udupi received the sandesha literature award(tulu) for his significant contribution to tulu language. the sandesha artsaward, instituted by sra sisters, was conferred on lingaraj gavai hiremath, avisually challenged artiste from hubli who has promoted folklore and music.noted film director rajendra singh babu received the sandesha cinema award.sandesha journalism award was bagged by journalist a. ishwaraiah. sandeshaspecial recognition awards in various categories were presented to dr olindapereira from mangalore (social work), b.a. sanadi from mumbai (literature, mediaand culture), h.s. gowramma from sagar (folk painting), karunaashraya inbangalore (compassionate service of cancer patients) and birds, belgaum (ruraldevelopment). the jury comprised prof.b.a. vivek rai (chairman), prof. amrithsomeshwar, prof. william madtha, fr samuel sequeira, richard louis, saraabubakar, na d''souza and praveen fernandes.
