It's stuffy at Chanchalguda jail
HYDERABAD: It'll be stuffy for the otherwise high-flying Gali Janardhan Reddy at the 1876-constructed Central Prison, Chanchalguda, in Hyderabad. The old construction doesn'tmeasure up to the palatial house the mining baron is accustomed to. And it'scrammed. As against the authorised capacity for 650, there are over 700 inmatesin the jail, which houses only undertrials. This means Reddy might find itdifficult to stretch himself comfortably when he sleeps in the barracks wherethe lights remain on during the night as a rule.Prisoners areallowed to move out of the barracks during the day, but that may pose problemsfor a high-profile prisoner like Reddy and his brother-in-law SrinivasaReddy.Prisons officials say people who come from a better economicbackground tend to withdraw completely and retreat into a cocoon when faced withunsavoury behaviour while mingling with other inmates. The formerKarnataka minister will have to wait in a queue for his plate of food. Also,he'd have to wash his plate and clothes, and do a bit of sweeping. Reddy willhave to sleep on a hard floor with Shabad stones in the barracks.
Undertrials, which Reddy is, can get their own bedsheet and packaged food.IfReddy gets a special-class prisoner status from the court, he will, then, beentitled to some privileges such as better food and accommodation in a differentenclosure like former Satyam chief Ramalinga Raju.Inmates haveaccess to newspapers and TV. They also get to play caroms, chess and badminton. The reception will be cold for any new inmate. Even if Reddy gets to wear hisown clothes, the strip search on entry is mandatory.BEHIND BARS* Reddy has to wait for his turn in a queue for food.
