Bengaluru–Hyderabad rail journey set to get faster from next month

BENGALURU: Rail journey between Bengaluru and Hyderabad will be on a faster track by next month. In a significant boost, South Western Railway (SWR) commissioned the doubled 30-km stretch between Makajipalli and Dharmavaram in southern Andhra Pradesh.

Along with the doubling, the newly commissioned track will see a major speed upgrade after the commissioner of railway safety authorised the section for operation at a maximum speed of 110 kmph. In fact, the trial run was conducted at a maximum speed of 121 kmph, during which no abnormal peaks were observed in the oscillation monitoring system.


With commissioning of this stretch, the entire doubling project between Penukonda and Dharmavaram was completed with the highest sanctioned speed of 110 kmph. The project involved construction of 66 minor bridges, 15 road underbridges, 1 foot overbridge, and development of 1 station yard comprising 5 lines.

Additionally, speed upgrade of the stretch between Yelahanka in north Bengaluru and Dharmavaram towards southern Andhra Pradesh to 130 kmph will be completed by March.

The 161-km corridor is expected to benefit several high-occupancy trains, including Yeshwantpur-Kacheguda Vande Bharat Express. The upgrade will be a relief to passengers who hoped for faster connectivity to Andhra Pradesh.
