Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: The city crime branch, in coordination with the railway police, arrested a Punjab-based murder accused at the city railway station after he arrived by train while allegedly attempting to evade capture in connection with the brutal killing of a 60-year-old woman in Patiala last month.
Police identified the arrested as Gurvinder Singh, alias Goldy (34) of Raungla in the Tripuri area of Patiala district. An officer said he was the son of the village's sarpanch.
According to police, Goldy and two accomplices allegedly murdered Baljeet Kaur (60) on Feb 19 over an old enmity. A case was registered at the Tripuri police station under Sections 103(1) and 3(5) of BNS. After the crime, all three fled and remained absconding, leading the victim's family to refuse her last rites till the culprits were arrested.
On March 8, the Punjab police informed the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar crime branch that Goldy was travelling to the city on the Sachkhand Express. Acting on the alert, crime branch inspector Gajanan Kalyankar coordinated with the railway police, and a team led by sub-inspector Abhijeet Chikhlikar was deployed to intercept him.
A trap was set by railway police inspector Prashant Gambhirrao and his team, leading his arrest. Police commissioner Pravin Pawar said, "The accused was traced and detained promptly after receiving information from the Punjab police. He was handed over to them following legal procedure."
A Punjab police team reached the city on March 9 and produced the accused before a local court, which granted a transit remand till March 12. The team then took Goldy into custody and left for Punjab for further investigation.
