State rights panel shows concern over care of psychiatric patients

AMRITSAR: The Punjab State Human Rights Commission (PSHRC) has expressed concern over the district administration’s alleged failure to fulfil promises regarding the care of psychiatric patients, especially those found wandering in the streets of Amritsar.

On Saturday, Justice Sant Parkash, chairperson of the PSHRC, visited the Mental Hospital here and reviewed the condition of the 233 admitted patients (142 men and 91 women), and revisited unresolved issues from his previous visit on Aug 14 last year.

As per an official release, the key issues discussed included the presence of treated patients who were not taken back by their families and the increasing number of psychiatric patients found wandering in the streets of Amritsar, posing risks to public safety. Psychiatric institute clerk held for Rs 23.9L fraud

Pratik Gawas, an upper division clerk at the Institute of Psychiatry and Human Behaviour in Bambolim, was arrested for allegedly diverting Rs 23.9 lakh of public funds into his own bank account. After a complaint from the dean, Dr S M Bandekar, Gawas confessed during police interrogation and has been booked under relevant sections. Further investigation continues.

7 out of 10 patients requiring critical care are antibiotic-resistant: Experts
