Airfares have gone north, emerging as a major concern for pilgrims planning to visit Prayagraj for the sacred Maha Kumbh Mela, said travel companies. ixigo data revealed a significant increase in airfare. Pune-Prayagraj route is one of the worst hit, with average one-way fare shooting up to approx Rs11,800 – a 78% jump from Rs6,400 in 2024. Alternative routes to nearby airports have also witnessed a substantial increase — with the Pune-Varanasi rate climbing 35% to around Rs7,600 and Pune-Lucknow route showing a 13% rise to Rs7,300, as per ixigo data. The situation isn't any better for Mumbai travellers. While regular fares to Prayagraj are around Rs5,000-Rs6,000, it has jumped to Rs12,000-Rs17,000 for the festival period in Jan and Feb.
