Jewar airport to boost Prayagraj’s connectivity & economy

Prayagraj: With Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurating the first phase of the Noida International Airport at Jewar on Saturday, new possibilities have opened up for faster connectivity, trade, and tourism for several cities of eastern Uttar Pradesh, including Prayagraj. Officials said the airport will provide Prayagraj residents an alternative to the congested approach routes to Delhi's IGI Airport, offering smoother access to western Uttar Pradesh and the NCR. At present, Prayagraj Civil Airport is connected to only six major cities. Airport director Rajesh Chawla said that the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has granted permission for direct flights between Jewar and Prayagraj. Although IndiGo earlier expressed interest, no service has yet been included in the current summer schedule. Once operational, this route is expected to significantly reduce travel time and allow passengers to board international flights from Jewar without navigating Delhi's traffic.The impact is expected to extend beyond passenger movement. Jewar airport is being developed as a major cargo hub, which trade representatives believe will benefit Prayagraj's agricultural and horticultural produce, such as guava, mango and ladyfinger, along with local handicrafts, by easing access to global markets at lower costs. Improved connectivity is also likely to attract investment and industrial activity in nearby regions, creating employment opportunities for local youth.The development also holds special significance for Prayagraj's religious tourism profile. Large gatherings during events such as Kumbh and Maha Kumbh drew millions of visitors, and better air connectivity through Jewar is expected to provide modern and faster travel options for both domestic and international pilgrims in the future.
