ALLAHABAD: The Allahabad University gets its first ever women football team. Nisha Kumari, Deepa Singh and Sunita Patel along with ten others are respectively the captain (and the goalkeeper too) and vice-captains of the team.
This first ever women Football squad (for 2009-10) is being selected for the coming North East zone inter-university Football championship which would be held from February 10 to February 16 at Kurukshetra University, Haryana.
Detailing on the formation of the team, Prof R K Upadhaya, secretary of AU Athletic Association (AUAA) the body looking after all the sporting facility on the campus, said that a total of 23 girls, belonging to AU and its constituent colleges, participated in the month-long training camp. Trained under N I S Football coach Indranil Ghosh, the team, comprising 13 players, is ready to show its talent on the grounds.
After the formal announcement of the team, on Friday, the players were introduced to the dean student welfare (DSW) Prof R K Singh who gave his best wishes to the team. The selected players include Nisha Kumari (the captain and the goalkeeper), Deepa Singh and Sunita Patel (the vice-captain) while the rest being Anupam Shukla, Neha Bind, Aaliya Farheen, Rachna Pal, Pooja Visvakarma, Priyanka, Vandana Yadav, Seema Pal, Bhawna Singh, Meena, Akanksha Srivastava and Pooja Singh. The coach of the team is Indranil Ghosh.
Although, varsity had its women team for various sports like Kho-Kho, Kabaddi, Table Tennis, Hockey etc. but now we have decided to try our hand in football and Cricket too, which would create good environment for female students not only in field of academics but sports too, said Prof Upadhayay.
