Four-way waste segregation to be compulsory in Ahmedabad: AMC

Ahmedabad: The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has decided to strictly enforce waste segregation norms across the city in line with the Solid Waste Management Rules-2026 issued by the ministry of environment, forest and climate change as per directives of the Supreme Court.

Under the new rules, all residential societies and commercial establishments in Ahmedabad will be required to segregate waste into four categories before handing it over to door-to-door garbage collection vehicles.

The four categories include wet waste, dry waste, sanitary waste and hazardous household waste. Wet waste (green bin) will include kitchen refuse along with fruit and vegetable waste, while dry waste (blue bin) will comprise paper, plastic, glass and metal items. Sanitary waste (red bin) such as used diapers, sanitary pads, shaving blades and sharp objects, must be securely wrapped before disposal.

Hazardous household waste (yellow bin) has been categorised as “special care waste”, which includes expired medicines, containers used to store pesticides, chemicals used in gardens and other chemicals.

AMC officials said every residential society and commercial unit must maintain four separate bins for collection of the segregated waste. According to AMC officials, the city generates 3,000-3,200 metric tonnes of solid waste every day.

The civic body has also warned that dumping garbage on streets, in open spaces, drains or water bodies, as well as burning or burying waste, will be treated as an offence under the new provisions.

According to AMC, failure to comply with the four-way segregation norms or negligence in implementation could invite strict punitive action under the Solid Waste Management Rules-2026 and other environmental laws. The corporation further stated that non-compliance may amount to contempt of the Supreme Court’s directions.

An AMC official, requesting anonymity, said, “This has been done following the Supreme Court’s order. This waste must be provided to door-to-door collection vehicles. Four types of dustbins must be placed outside the society, from where the waste will be collected by door-to-door waste collection vehicles. Awareness programmes will be conducted regarding this.”
