Four undertrial prisoners booked for attacking staff inside Sabarmati Central Jail
Ahmedabad: Four undertrial prisoners lodged in the old complex of Sabarmati Central Jail were booked after they allegedly attacked jail staff, hurled brick pieces and threatened to kill prison personnel during a violent scuffle inside the jail premises on Monday.
According to an FIR registered at Ranip police station, the incident took place around 11 am near the subedar office in Yard No. 4 during morning duty hours, following a quarrel between the undertrials.
The complainant, Bharat Chavda, a jail constable posted in the prison for the past one-and-a-half years, told police that jail staff rushed to the spot after hearing loud commotion among inmates.
The accused were identified as undertrial prisoners Sangramsinh Shikarwar, Satish Patni, Hasmukh Hadiyol and Ankit Lodhi. The FIR states that the four allegedly abused jail staff and got into a scuffle with prison personnel.
During the chaos, one of the accused allegedly picked up a brick from a nearby garden area and struck himself on the head, while other inmates also allegedly attempted to injure themselves. Officials said Patni sustained injuries to his hand during the incident and was taken along with the other accused to the jail hospital for treatment.
However, while being taken out of the hospital, the four inmates allegedly turned aggressive again and attacked the complainant and other jail staff members.
Police said the accused allegedly threatened prison personnel with dire consequences and warned that they would be killed outside the jail premises. As additional staff members rushed to bring the situation under control, the inmates allegedly broke bricks into pieces and hurled it at officials, triggering panic inside the prison.
Investigators said the accused also attempted to obstruct prison administration and create disorder within the jail complex. One of the injured inmates was later shifted to Civil Hospital for further treatment.
Ranip police registered a case against the four undertrial prisoners under charges of assault, criminal intimidation, obstructing public servants from discharging duty and other relevant offences. Further investigation was underway.
