Air India AI 171 crash probe in final stage, report likely in a month: Aviation minister Rammohan Naidu
AHMEDABAD: The investigation into the Air India flight AI 171 crash is in its final stages, and the report is expected within a month, Union civil aviation minister Rammohan Naidu said on Friday.
Speaking to the media on the sidelines of an event at GIFT City, Naidu said, "Based on the information we have received, the process is in final stages. The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) is investigating independently, and all resources they require are being provided to them. Mostly it will take a month." The minister also said that the govt is well-aware that it will be a year to the incident.
On June 12, 2025, Air India flight AI 171, a Boeing 787-8 operating from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick, crashed into the BJ Medical College Hostel complex shortly after take-off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. The aircraft burst into flames, killing 241 of the 242 people on board and 19 people on the ground.
"A proper investigation is underway. The due procedure is being thoroughly followed. We must understand that when such an investigation takes place; and especially this was an international flight and foreign nationals were travelling on that plane; it will be up for scrutiny," Naidu told mediapersons.
'Airline urged to continue interaction with relatives'
It can be questioned by any country or institution. Therefore, we need to carry out the investigation in all seriousness, fairness and with transparency," Naidu added.
"The investigation is being done accordingly. From our end, we're trying that we expedite the investigation. But due to that (hurry), we do not want to interrupt the process," he added.
Responding to concerns raised by some victims' families over Air India's handling of compensation and support, he said the ministry was closely monitoring the situation.
"We're monitoring the situation and we're encouraging the airlines to continuously interact with the passengers and their due compensation be cleared. We have a cell in the ministry coordinating for the compensation and other measures announced at that time. If someone has any issue, we will look into it and the ministry will extend its full support," he said.
Some 30 families of crash victims from across Gujarat recently wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, seeking the release of Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR) and Flight Data Recorder (FDR) data to help establish the cause of the crash.
