5,500 residential, commercial units in Ahmedabad identified as bulk waste generators
Ahmedabad: The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has begun strict enforcement of Solid Waste Management Rules-2026 for bulk waste generators across all zones and wards in the city in keeping with the Centre’s regulations and Supreme Court directives.
A civic survey has identified 5,500 residential societies, commercial complexes and other large units in the first phase as bulk waste generators, with the number expected to rise. Under the new rules, any unit with a built-up area of 20,000 sq m or more, daily water consumption of 40,000 litres or more, or daily solid waste generation of 100kg or more will qualify as a bulk waste generator.
The category includes hotels, restaurants, religious institutions, govt and semi-govt offices, educational institutions, universities, large residential apartments, flats, societies, commercial establishments and shopping malls. All units classified as bulk waste generators must process biodegradable or wet waste on-site. Dry waste must be segregated and handed over to authorized recyclers.
AMC said the move is aimed at reducing pressure on landfills, promoting scientific waste management and strengthening environmental protection. The corporation has warned that failure to carry out on-site waste processing or any violation of the rules will be treated as contempt of the Supreme Court order. Violators may face strict action under the Solid Waste Management Rules-2026 and other applicable environmental laws.
An AMC official said, “To make Ahmedabad cleaner, greener and more environment-friendly, AMC appeals for cooperation from all institutions and citizens. With the message ‘Green Ahmedabad, Clean Ahmedabad,’ the corporation will accelerate the citywide awareness and implementation campaign. Public notices will be issued by the AMC on this matter. Letters will be sent to all residential societies, commercial complexes and other large units categorized as bulk waste generators. They will be required to establish the necessary system within a year, failing which strict action will be taken against them.” age ‘Green Ahmedabad, Clean Ahmedabad,’ the corporation will accelerate the citywide awareness and implementation campaign.
