AGRA: Financial distress and mounting medical expenses for their 10-year-old son, who was suffering from a neurological illness, are suspected to be the reasons behind the deaths of five members of a family found inside their locked house in Amanpur town of Uttar Pradesh's Kasganj district on Sat.
DIG (Aligarh Range) Prabhakar Chaudhary, who inspected the site, said, "The house was latched from the inside, and there were no signs of forced entry. From interactions with locals, financial distress appears to be a possible reason."
Sharing autopsy details, Kasganj ASP Sushil Kumar said the man died due to hanging, his wife due to haemorrhage, while the children are suspected to have died from poisoning. "The viscera of the children has been preserved for further analysis as the exact cause of death is yet to be confirmed," he said, adding that the deaths likely occurred 48–72 hours before the bodies were found.
Shyamveer Singh (50), a welder, and his wife Ramshree (46) were cremated in Nagla Bhojraj on Sunday, while their three children — Prachi (14), Akanksha (12) and Girish (10) — were buried.
Police said the family lived near a petrol pump in Amanpur, where Shyamveer ran a rented welding shop and stayed in the rear portion of the premises. Neighbours alerted police on Saturday evening after noticing the house had remained shut for an unusually long time and spotting Shyamveer hanging inside through an iron grill.
Officers arrived at the scene around 6.30pm, used a welding machine to cut open the door, and sent the bodies for postmortem examination. Police said the three children did not show any visible external injury marks during the initial inspection.
Shyamveer's uncle, Gaya Prasad, said the family had been under severe financial strain. "His son Girish had a neurological problem. A lot of money was being spent on treatment. A few days ago, he had borrowed Rs 1,000 from a neighbour. He had taken financial help from others too," he said.
Meanwhile, UP Congress chief Ajay Rai visited the bereaved family on Sunday and expressed condolences. He termed the deaths "tragic" and demanded that the govt provide Rs 50 lakh compensation and a govt job to one family member.
Police said further investigation is underway to ascertain the sequence of events. The incident comes days after a similar case in Mathura, where a man allegedly killed his wife and three children before dying by electrocution.
