Agra: A fast-track court in Muzaffarnagar has sentenced six members of a family, including a 60-year-old woman, her son and daughter, to life imprisonment for murdering a 38-year-old farmer from Shamli, who was a key eyewitness in the 2013 killing of a Delhi Police sub-inspector's son.
The verdict, delivered by Judge Nishant Singla, pertains to the 2017 murder of Anjul Kumar from Lilaun village under the Shamli police station, the victim's family lawyer Shauraj Malik said on Saturday. On Feb 26, 2017, Anjul was returning home when he was surrounded and shot dead by Shakuntala Devi, her son Amit (30), daughter Anju (32) and three other family members.
"Anjul was a key witness in the murder of his 12-year-old nephew, Harshit Kumar. Harshit's father, Sanjeev Kumar, a sub-inspector with Delhi Police, had lodged a complaint naming Shakuntala and her other son Sumit as accused. The family had been pressuring Anjul to withdraw his testimony. When he refused, they conspired to eliminate him," advocate Malik said.
Following Anjul's murder, an FIR was registered under IPC sections 302 (murder), 120-B (criminal conspiracy), 148 (rioting with deadly weapons), 506 (criminal intimidation) and 147 (rioting). The accused were arrested but later released on bail.
"After evaluating all witness testimonies and evidence, the court on Friday sentenced all six convicts to life term and imposed a fine of Rs 65,000 each," said additional district govt counsel (ADGC), Neeraj Kant Malik.
