2 Haryana brothers held after encounter for killing Mathura postmaster for opposing niece’s marriage
AGRA: Two brothers from Haryana were arrested by Mathura Police on Tuesday following an encounter in connection with the kidnapping and murder of a 23-year-old postmaster, allegedly over his opposition to his niece's marriage, officials said.Police said Ramveer Singh, a resident of Kosi Kalan, was allegedly abducted on Feb 9 while on his way to work. He was intercepted by Bharat Tewatia (25) and his brother Ranjeet (28), both engaged in private finance work, and taken away in a car. The accused allegedly shot him inside the vehicle, burnt the body and dumped it in Palwal before abandoning the car and weapon in Mathura's Chhata area. The victim's partially charred body was recovered from a canal in Palwal on Feb 13 by Haryana Police. He is survived by his wife Sonam and their 10-month-old son. The body was identified by Ramveer's brother Ajit based on a ring and marks on his leg. An FIR was subsequently registered at Shergarh police station under BNS sections 103(1) (murder) and 140 (kidnapping), officials said.Shergarh SHO Pradeep Kumar said, "CCTV footage helped trace the suspects to Haryana. During investigation, it was revealed that Ramveer's niece had married Bharat, a resident of Alawalpur village in Palwal, in Dec 2025 without the family's consent.
Ramveer opposed the marriage, which may have led to enmity."SP (rural) Suresh Chandra Rawat said, "The accused were arrested from a dhaba in Kosi Kalan near the Uttar Pradesh-Haryana border. While being taken for recovery of the murder weapon, Bharat fired at the police with intent to kill. In retaliatory firing, he was shot in the right leg and later admitted for treatment. A car, a country-made pistol and cartridges were recovered."A separate FIR has been registered in connection with the encounter under BNS section 109 (attempt to murder) and relevant provisions of the Arms Act, the SP added.
