Police said BSF troops patrolling the Kalamchera border outpost spotted a group of smugglers around 7.30 am.

They were armed with sharp-edged weapons and were trying to smuggle goods across the border to Bangladesh.
A BSF release said the smugglers were on both sides of the border fence and when personnel of the paramilitary force asked them to stop, the smugglers ignored the warnings and became aggressive. They tried to encircle the BSF personnel on duty, aiming to assault them and seize their weapons. Sensing imminent danger to their lives and govt property, a BSF jawan fired a non-lethal PAG round in self-defence, it stated.
However, this only emboldened the smugglers, who continued their aggressive actions. A scuffle ensued during which constable Rajeev Kumar, perceiving a severe threat to his life and weapon, fired a round from his Insas rifle. This resulted in the death of a Bangladeshi smuggler approximately 150 yards inside the Indian territory, the BSF release said.
