Semicon India 2025: Fujifilm Electronic plans India factory
NEW DELHI: In an affirmation of India's semiconductor ambitions, Japanese supply chain major Fujifilm Electronic Materials on Wednesday said it is keen to set up a factory in India as it explores new investments and hirings in the country to cater to the growing fab ecosystem.
"India has a big potential across semiconductor manufacturing, supply chain management and even in new technologies, innovation and capability creation... Even Micron as well as other global companies are looking at India. If you ask why, it is because unlike China or other countries, India already has a strong foundation in technology, built on its skilled people," Tetsuya Iwasaki, general manager for Fujifilm's Electronic Materials Business Division told TOI on sidelines of the Semicon India 2025 event.
Fujifilm offers semiconductor materials used in wafer processing in manufacturing and has clients like TSMC and GlobalFoundries.
"We are planning for a factory. In fact, we are the first company to invest at this scale in Dholera, Gujarat... We do not have the biggest ideas finalised yet, but we have already proposed three solutions: First, production by ourselves; Second, licensed production by Indian companies and third, a joint venture with semiconductor manufacturers. Semiconductor manufacturers in India have been very appreciative of this variation of support and collaboration options," Iwasaki said.
He said India has requisite sources to make a significant stride in the high-technology world of semiconductors. "This country has very rich resources, both in technology and in skilled people. That's the first strength. The second strength is that India has many industries that rely heavily on semiconductor chips, such as automotive, electronics, data centres, and even data module packaging. This means India offers important opportunities on both sides: As a strong base of talent and as a growing market for semiconductor demand."
