How to clear a foggy windshield quickly in cold and rainy weather
Fog on a car windshield is a usual issue when driving, particularly on winter mornings and during humid weather. It usually comes without warning and can lower the visibility so much that the risk of driving being unsafe. To most drivers, it is just a small annoyance, but even a thin fog on the windshield can make road markings less visible, a pedestrian can be hidden, or it can delay your reaction time.
Windscreen fog is caused by an imbalance of moisture and temperature between the glass and the surrounding air. The solution is simple, but it requires the adoption of the appropriate procedure for the given situation. Knowing why fog forms and how to remove it quickly and prevent it from forming again is essential for safety and comfort while driving in ever-changing environmental circumstances.
Fog appears when warm, moist air meets a cooler glass surface. Inside the car, this usually happens in cold weather when breath and damp air condense on a cold windshield. Outside fog is more common in humid or rainy conditions when the glass is cooler than the surrounding air. Air conditioning can also cool the windshield enough to trigger condensation. The side of the glass that fogs up depends on which air is warmer and which holds more moisture at that moment.
Step 1
Turn on the front windshield defogger. This directs warm, dry air onto the glass.
Step 2
Switch off air recirculation and allow fresh air inside. This helps push moist air out of the cabin.
Step 3
If the car is stationary, open the doors or slightly lower the windows for a short time. This equalises moisture levels.
Step 4
Keep the air flow running for a few minutes until the glass stays clear.
Step 1
Turn off or reduce the air conditioning if it is running very cold.
Step 2
Use the windscreen wipers to clear surface moisture.
Step 3
Allow the glass temperature to rise slightly so condensation stops forming.
A clear windshield rarely needs forceful wiping or guesswork. With the right steps, fog clears quickly and stays away longer.

Foggy windshield? Know how to remove it

Defogging the inside of the windshield clears moisture fast
Interior fog is best handled by reducing humidity and warming the glass.Step 1
Turn on the front windshield defogger. This directs warm, dry air onto the glass.

Step 3
If the car is stationary, open the doors or slightly lower the windows for a short time. This equalises moisture levels.
Step 4

Defogging the outside of the windshield needs cooling control
Exterior fog does not need heat.Step 1
Turn off or reduce the air conditioning if it is running very cold.
Step 2
Use the windscreen wipers to clear surface moisture.
Step 3
Allow the glass temperature to rise slightly so condensation stops forming.
Car defoggers use heat or electricity to remove mist
Front windshield defoggers work through the heating and ventilation system. They blow warm air directly onto the glass to dry it. Rear windshield defoggers use thin electrical heating lines embedded in the glass. These lines heat the surface evenly and clear fog quickly. Rear systems are not used on front glass because the lines would block visibility.Simple habits reduce fogging over time
Moisture builds up quietly inside cars. Avoid leaving wet clothes, umbrellas, or mats inside for long periods. Air out the cabin occasionally on warm, dry days. Clean the inside of the windshield, as dirt attracts moisture. Use fresh air mode when carrying passengers, since breathing adds humidity to the cabin.A clear windshield rarely needs forceful wiping or guesswork. With the right steps, fog clears quickly and stays away longer.
