GUWAHATI: Gujarat chief minister and veteran BJP leader Narendra Modi on Thursday said the problem of Assam's illegal immigration could be solved only if the Congress was voted out of power in the northeastern state.
"Despite being in the government for two consecutive terms, the Congress has not done anything to stop infiltration from Bangladesh. Besides, the party has done nothing for Assam's development. The BJP is the only party that can ensure all-round development for Asam like that it has done in Gujarat," Modi said while addressing an election campaign meeting at Golokganj in the minority-dominated Dhubri district.
Accusing the Congress of not taking any initiative to stop cattle smuggling to Bangladesh, he said, "The need of the hour is to defeat the Congress in the election and save the state from illegal Bangladeshis. Everybody should remember that the Congress has not taken any initiative to stop cattle smuggling."
"Cow is a symbol of the primary source of livelihood for many poor families. But the Congress has not done anything to save the animal to fall prey to the smugglers' greed," Modi said.
The Gujarat CM also took a dig at the Congress government in Assam for failing to do anything for lakhs of unemployed youth in the state. "Come to my state and you will see that youngsters from each district of Assam are there in search of job. Of the total employment in the country during 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010, I have offered 72 per cent jobs in Gujarat. But the situation in Assam is dismal," he added.
