Jilted lover kills woman in Delhi

NEW DELHI: It was a case of unrequited love that turnedbloody. Angered by her refusal to marry him, Ashish Nandwana (26) allegedlystabbed aspiring airhostess Shashi Rai (23) in a Nizammuddin guest house onSaturday morning and was about to flee the city when the law caught up with himlate Sunday night. Police said that Ashish and his cousin ManojKumar Nandwana (23) were arrested near Nizamuddin railway station when they wereplanning to leave the city, abandoning the Indica car in which they had come toDelhi. The police have also seized the weapon of offence, a knife, the bloodstained clothes of Shashi, Ashish and Manoj, other belongings of the deceasedand the Indica. According to the police, Ashish wanted to marryShashi and had proposed to her on several occasions. He had also talked to thevictim's family. ������But she avoided him, for he was alcoholic andunemployed. Though he kept pursuing her, he used to get annoyed and angry overher friendship with other males as he was over possessive,'' said DCP (south)HGS Dhaliwal. Confirming this, Shashi's father Pramod Kumar Rai, apractising criminal lawyer in Ranchi, told Times City: ������She hadtold me about Ashish earlier and also said that she never liked him. I onlyinsisted her to go to Jaipur for better avenues as she was earlier studying atFrankfinn Institute at Ranchi. She had completed her course in February and waslooking for a job. I want the accused to be punished.'' According tothe police, on March 28, Ashish drove his cousin Manoj and another friend Savitato Delhi from Jaipur on his Indica and picked up Shashi, who had been out ofJaipur since March 23, at Behrore in Rajasthan. He convinced Shashi to join themstating that they were going to Gurgaon for Savita's interview and would be backin a couple of days. On reaching Delhi on Friday midnight, theyfirst went to Rajdoot Hotel but found it expensive after which they approachedShashi's friends, Dilshad and Nawab, who are into poultry business atSultanpuri. They arranged two rooms for them in Central Guest House at BastiNizammudin. Shashi and Ashish stayed in room 232 while Manoj and Savita lodgedin room 233, said police. Dilshad's father was known to Shashi's elder sisterswho are married and settled in Jaipur.������On Saturdaymorning, Ashish and Shashi had an altercation. Ashish objected to her friendshipwith other males and her staying with them from March 23 to 28 March withoutinforming him,'' added DCP Dhaliwal. Enraged over her constant rebukes and herfriendship with other males, Ashish had already made up his mind to kill Shashi,said an official. ������And in the ensuing fight, he stabbedShashi with knife in her neck and abdomen. Hearing her cries, Manoj also reachedtheir room and helped Ashish wash off the blood stains on the floor and pouredwater on the victim to clean the blood. Apprehending that other inmates may havealso heard the cries, they concocted the story that Shashi had been injuredafter falling in the bathroom,'' said a police official. The duothen wrapped her up in a bedsheet and took her to Sahi Hospital in Jungpura.While admitting her, they gave false identity and also tried to mislead thehospital authorities by telling that she had attempted suicide. Later, fearingthe worst in case of her death, they tried to arrange for medicare.However, when they learnt that the victim was not likely to survive,they sneaked out of the hospital, came back to the guest house and collectedtheir belongings. They dropped Savita (22), who was not aware of their plan, atIndia Gate from where she took a bus to Jaipur on Saturday. However, the twowere nabbed by the police on Sunday.An undergraduate, Ashish used tohelp his father in his steel and building materials business. He wanted to marryShashi and even took her to his house on March 22. He is the second eldest inthe family and has three sisters. Manoj, his cousin, is working as an assistantsecurity officer in Deccan Airway at Jaipur. He was also pursuing graduationthrough correspondence. His father runs a business in Jaipur, added police.A case under section 302 (murder), 201 (destruction of evidence) and34 (common intention) have been registered at Nizamuddin policestation.Also read: Father vows to get daughter justice
