Seven terror launch pads in the Pakistan-occupied Kashmir were destroyed by the Indian Army on the night of September 28 and 29, when soldiers crossed the Line of Control and carried out swift operation. The surgical strike was a result of tough decision making by the Narendra Modi-led BJP government at the Centre and was widely appreciated by the people. On February 9, 2016, some students of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) organised an event in protest against the capital punishment given to Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru in 2013, despite being denied permission by the college authorities. After members of the ABVP complained, terming the event 'anti-national', police arrested JNU Student Union President Kanhaiya Kumar. Following his arrest, massive protests broke out in JNU, while social media - in India and abroad - was abuzz with people voicing their opinion on the issue. The issue further gained notoriety after instances of fabrication of evidence came to the fore and when it was claimed that there was an attempt to portray JNU students as 'anti-national'. The election to elect the new assembly and the next chief minister of Tamil Nadu was held in May, 2016.
