Surgical strike

Seven terror launch pads in the Pakistan-occupied Kashmir were destroyed by the Indian Army on the night of September 28 and 29, when soldiers crossed the Line of Control and carried out swift operation. The surgical strike was a result of tough decision making by the Narendra Modi-led BJP government at the Centre and was widely appreciated by the people. Demonetisation

In a historic move, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced on November 8, 2016, the government’s decision to ban or demonetise the existing higher denomination currency notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1000. Uri attack

Four terrorists struck a camp of the Indian Army, which is close to the headquarter of the 12th Brigade at Uri in Jammu and Kashmir’s Baramulla District in September, 2016. The suicide attack killed 17 Army soldiers and injured 19. This was one of the deadliest terrorist strikes on security forces in recent times.(Reuters photo)

Pathankot attack

JNU protest

On February 9, 2016, some students of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) organised an event in protest against the capital punishment given to Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru in 2013, despite being denied permission by the college authorities. After members of the ABVP complained, terming the event 'anti-national', police arrested JNU Student Union President Kanhaiya Kumar. Following his arrest, massive protests broke out in JNU, while social media - in India and abroad - was abuzz with people voicing their opinion on the issue. The issue further gained notoriety after instances of fabrication of evidence came to the fore and when it was claimed that there was an attempt to portray JNU students as 'anti-national'. Jayalalithaa heart attack

Millions of former Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa’s followers and partymen were shocked when the news of her hospitalisation came out in September, 2016. For the next two months, prayers were organised and yagnas held for Jayalalithaa’s recovery but a devastating heart attack on December 4 proved to be fatal for already frail Jayalalithaa who passed away the next day. Tamil Nadu election

The election to elect the new assembly and the next chief minister of Tamil Nadu was held in May, 2016. Jayalalithaa’s All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam or AIADMK won the election with huge margins, making her the only serving chief minister to return to power in the state since 1984.( TOI photo: L.R. One of the surprise entries in the list of top Google trends for the year 2016 is ‘Sonam Gupta Bewafa Hai’. On January 2016, a Rs 10 note surfaced on Twitter with ‘Sonam Gupta Bewafa Hai’ written on it. After the government’s demonetisation decision in November, a picture of new Rs 2000 note with ‘Sonam Gupta Bewafa Hai’ scribbled on it surfaced again causing a nationwide frenzy.
