'You called Americans the dumbest people': Row over Indian matchmaking app CEO being denied US visa
An old social media post of the Indian CEO whose US visa was recently denied surfaced as he claimed there was no proper ground for his rejection. Jasveer Singh is the CEO of an AI-powered matchmaking app Knot Dating but he was told that his visa was denied for his weak ties to India. Singh called this denial illogical as he is an entrepreneur who has Indians on his payroll and no reason to not return to India. But now, a 2016 post in which he made a snarky comment on President Donald Trump winning the election is being cited as the real reason for the denial.
"Congratulations USA! You managed to show that Indians are not only dumbest people in the world," the CEO had written in 2016.
"You called Americans the dumbest people in the world… why do you want to come here at all and why should we take someone who has that opinion of us?" US political commentator Ryan James Girdusky said.
As Singh also did not rule out the responsibility of his social media comments behind the visa denial, a major debate started. "So something he tweeted 10 years ago should be taken as their current position? Because we all know what Vance was saying about Trump 10 years ago," one said.
"A friend said next time just delete your tweets on the US and NRIs before the interview and your visa gets approved," Singh commented on the possibility of his social media posts nixing the visa.
While social media vetting has been widened to H-1B and H-4 visa holders since December 15, the process existed for most other visa applicants since 2019. And all tourist or business visa applicants have to submit the names of their social media handles along with their applications.
It is not confirmed whether Singh's B1/B2 visa was denied because of his past X post as the official clarification claimed that Singh could not prove adequate ties to India to ensure that he would come back to India.
