PM Modi US Visit Live Updates: PM Modi returns to India after concluding his visit to France and US

PM Modi US Visit Live: Prime Minister Narendra Modi concluded his two-day visit to the US. He held bilateral talks with US President Donald Trump on trade, tariffs, defence and energy among others.

After his visit to France upon President Emmanuel Macron's invitation, Modi will be among the first global leaders to visit the US following Trump's inauguration on January 20, after his victory in the November elections. Officials have noted that this visit offers a prime opportunity to connect with the new administration across numerous areas of shared interest.

During a press briefing on February 7, foreign secretary Vikram Misri emphasised that the Prime Minister's US visit, following President Trump's invitation, showcases the importance of India-US relations and indicates the bipartisan support this partnership enjoys in the US.

The itinerary included Modi's engagements with business leaders and the Indian diaspora in the US.
The Prime Minister will hold bilateral talks with President Trump in both restricted and delegation-level formats. The discussions are anticipated to address various bilateral issues, along with deliberations on regional and international developments.

The Foreign Secretary highlighted the mutual interests shared by both nations across various sectors, including commerce, defence, technology transfer, fighting terrorism, Indo-Pacific security and cultural exchanges.

The diplomatic engagement aims to strengthen the bonds between India and the US through enhanced bilateral relations.
The Foreign Secretary, Misri, emphasised the significant role of the Indian diaspora, noting "The 5.4 million-strong Indian community in the US and the more than 3,50,000 students from India who are pursuing studies in universities strengthen this bond immeasurably."

He indicated that the Prime Minister's US visit would provide fresh impetus to this strategic partnership, with plans to issue a joint declaration upon its conclusion.

This marks the Prime Minister's initial visit following Trump's second term commencement on January 20.

The Foreign Secretary explained that following the President's inauguration, the Prime Minister extended his congratulations via telephone, during which both leaders committed to arranging this meeting.

PM Modi US Visit Live: 'India charges tremendous tariffs and that's why Harley Davidson couldn't sell their motorbikes there,' says Trump
"Traditionally, India is right at the top of the pack pretty much. There are a couple of smaller countries that are actually more but India charges tremendous tariffs. I remember when Harley Davidson couldn't sell their motorbikes in India because of the fact that in India - the tax was so high, the tariff was so high, and Harley was forced to build... But I think they built a factory in India in order to avoid paying the tariffs. And that's what people can do with us. They can build a factory here, a plant or whatever it may be here and that includes the medical, that includes cars, that includes chips and semiconductors," Trump said after imposing 'reciprocal tariffs.'

PM Modi US Visit Live: Trump to meet Modi amid trade tensions, tariff spikes, and strategic talks
President Donald Trump to meet Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday as the Indian leader looks to shield his country from the wave of tariffs the Trump administration has imposed on key trading partners. Modi, fresh from a political victory in India’s federal territory elections, has praised Trump’s leadership and is pushing for deeper cooperation in trade, defense, and technology.

Despite warm rhetoric, the White House visit comes amid economic friction. Trump, who has repeatedly called India the "tariff king," announced fresh reciprocal tariffs, vowing to match other countries' import taxes. While New Delhi has made concessions—lowering tariffs on U.S. goods and striking key defense deals, including a partnership between General Electric and Hindustan Aeronautics—Trump remains focused on reducing America’s $50 billion trade deficit with India.

Beyond trade, immigration and strategic concerns will also feature in the talks. India recently repatriated 104 migrants as part of Trump's border crackdown, a move likely to earn Modi goodwill. Meanwhile, Washington views India as critical to countering China’s influence in the Indo-Pacific, particularly as it prepares to host the Quad summit later this year.

With both leaders known for their nationalist agendas, the meeting could define the next phase of U.S.-India ties amid shifting global alliances.

PM Modi US Visit Live: Zelenskyy unhappy as Trump calls Putin before him, signals concern over US priorities

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed displeasure after learning that former U.S. President Donald Trump spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin before him. Zelenskyy revealed on Thursday that Trump had initially planned to address both leaders together but ultimately spoke to Putin first. "It’s really not very pleasant in any case," Zelenskyy said, though he noted that Trump reassured him of Ukraine’s importance.

The call between Trump and Putin, which took place on Wednesday, was praised by Russian officials, with Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov calling it “appealing.” Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev described it as a significant shift in global politics. Russian state media portrayed the conversation as a sign of changing U.S. policy, suggesting Ukraine’s role in peace negotiations might be diminished.

Zelenskyy responded by asserting that Ukraine would not accept any agreements made without its involvement. "We cannot accept it, as an independent country, any agreements (made) without us," he said.

The development has raised concerns among European allies, particularly within NATO, about the implications for Ukraine and broader security in the region. “Ukraine, Europe, and the United States should work on this together,” said Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk. Estonia’s foreign minister Margus Tsahkna also emphasized the need for a unified Western stance against Russian aggression.

President Donald Trump to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday as the White House signals potential reciprocal tariffs across the global economy. Modi, who has openly praised Trump, seeks to shield India from trade measures that have hit other nations. Ahead of their meeting, Trump is expected to sign an order that could expand tariffs on imports, raising concerns about the future of U.S.-India trade relations.

Meanwhile, European discontent over shifting U.S. policy on the Russia-Ukraine war is expected to dominate discussions at NATO's meeting on Thursday. Frustration has been mounting as the U.S. recalibrates its stance, potentially impacting the alliance’s unified approach.

At the Capitol, Robert F. Kennedy’s nomination for health secretary reaches a final Senate vote. His confirmation process has been marked by sharp partisan divides, with Republicans and some centrist Democrats scrutinizing his policy positions.

In another development sending shockwaves through Washington, Elon Musk’s DOGE team is actively working to dismantle significant portions of the federal government, leading to unrest among federal employees. The extent of the restructuring remains unclear, but the initiative has already triggered heated debates over governance and the role of private influence in public administration.

As these key events unfold, tensions remain high across trade, diplomacy, and domestic policy.

Modi US Visit Live: Will PM have courage to convey to Trump outrage at 'inhuman' deportation of Indians, asks Congress
Ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's meeting with US President Donald Trump, the Congress raised concerns about whether he would express India's collective displeasure regarding the deportation of Indian citizens from the United States. Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh posed several questions, including whether PM would inform the US president about India's intention to arrange its own aircraft for future deportees, similar to Venezuela and Colombia.

"The prime minister will be first hugging and then meeting his 'good friend' President Trump at 2,30 am IST on the morning of February 14. India has already appeased the US president by slashing import duties on some farm produce and on Mr Trump's favourite Harley-Davidson motorcycles," Ramesh stated on X.

Ramesh highlighted that a pledge had been made to modify the Civil Liability for Nuclear Damages Act, 2010, as requested by US companies.

He noted that whilst agreements would be signed and defence procurement contracts would be finalised, there were important questions for the prime minister, including: "Will Mr Modi summon up the courage to convey to the US president India's collective outrage at the inhuman manner in which Indian citizens were deported back a few days ago?"

Additionally, Ramesh questioned whether "Prime Minister Modi convey to the US president that India would send its own aircraft -- like Venezuela and Colombia did -- to bring back Indian deportees in the future?"

On a cold Wednesday evening in Washington DC, Tulsi Gabbard, as America's pioneering female Hindu-American legislator and newly-appointed intelligence director, whose loyalty to the US has faced recent scrutiny from traditional establishment figures, visited Blair House, the US Presidential guest house, to welcome Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

This meeting took place shortly after the US Senate confirmed Gabbard's appointment as head of the Directorate of National Intelligence, and immediately following Modi's arrival in the US capital. This distinctive meeting, uncommon for intelligence directors to publicly meet international leaders, indicates positive prospects for bilateral intelligence collaboration.

A Senior Advisor (Trade) and former Assistant US Trade Representative, Linscott, expressed confidence that both nations would initiate comprehensive trade discussions, despite existing hurdles.

Speaking to news agency ANI, Linscott stated, "There is tremendous potential and I think that during PM Modi's visit, the two sides will agree to start the negotiation...covering the full range of trade issues, I'm very optimistic...It will be challenging negotiations, difficult times, some disruptions, and there likely will be threats of tariffs, some new tariffs, it will be complicated and that's true of many trade negotiations...but I do think they would conclude on quite a large trade deal."

Addressing tariff concerns, Linscott explained, "With the President, each day brings new questions, new possibilities of announcements of tariffs. It's very difficult to anticipate. PM Modi US visit live: Modi-Trump ties hold key amid rising MAGA fervour
In his efforts to promote 'Make in India', PM Modi faces challenges in a nation dominated by Trump's 'America First' agenda, which has disrupted traditional alliances and sought expansion through territories like Greenland and Canada.

Unlike their cordial first meeting at the White House in 2017, this encounter occurs during a tense period marked by disputes over tariffs and territorial matters with key US allies. India has attempted to address tariff concerns through concessions before PM Modi's visit, whilst minimising discussions about immigration and H-1B visa matters, choosing instead to emphasise broader bilateral objectives.

The current White House administration, focused intensely on MAGA priorities, shows limited interest in broader strategic cooperation. Trump's core supporters perceive India negatively, viewing it as a source of competition for American jobs through its students and workforce presence in the US.

Nevertheless, the Trump-Modi relationship is anticipated to overcome bilateral tensions, enhanced by PM Modi's interactions with Elon Musk, who holds significant influence in American society. Modi's diplomatic skill is evident in his engagement with both Musk and his rival Sam Altman, competing leaders in AI development.

PM Modi US visit live: PM Modi meets US Director Of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard
Prime Minister Modi's initial engagement upon arriving in the US was a meeting with Tulsi Gabbard, who had just been confirmed as Director of National Intelligence.

The Senate endorsed Tulsi Gabbard as President Donald Trump's director of national intelligence on Wednesday. Initially sceptical Republicans ultimately supported her nomination despite early reservations about her credentials and decision-making.

Her selection to supervise and harmonise the nation's 18 intelligence agencies was considered unusual, given her previous Russia-friendly statements, her encounter with former Syrian President Bashar Assad, and her earlier backing of Edward Snowden.

The Senate, where Republicans maintain a narrow majority, confirmed Gabbard, a military veteran and former Democratic representative from Hawaii, with a 52-48 vote. Democratic senators opposed the nomination, while Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky was the sole Republican dissenter.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has concluded his two-day working visit to the United States, which included a bilateral meeting with President Donald Trump. Officials say the engagement aims to strengthen and advance the strategic partnership between the two nations.

Following his visit to France at President Emmanuel Macron’s invitation, Modi is among the first global leaders to visit the US after Trump’s inauguration on January 20, following his victory in the November elections. Officials view this visit as a key opportunity to engage with the new administration across multiple areas of mutual interest.

During a February 7 briefing, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri emphasized that Modi’s visit, at Trump’s invitation, underscores the significance of India-U.S. relations and reflects the bipartisan support the partnership enjoys in Washington.

Modi’s itinerary included meetings with business leaders and interactions with the Indian diaspora. He also held bilateral talks with Trump in both restricted and delegation-level formats, covering key bilateral issues as well as regional and global developments.
