How Nikki Haley is emerging as a strong contender in the 2024 Republican race

Nikki Haley, the former South Carolina governor, is making significant strides in the 2024 GOP undercard race, challenging the perception of it being a "two-man race." Her recent rise in popularity is reshaping the dynamics of the Republican primary, especially as the party seeks alternatives to Donald Trump.

Haley's campaign recently held an event in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where she stayed until every supporter had the chance to meet her. Despite the unusual choice of a funeral home as the venue, the event highlighted Haley's resilience and growing momentum in the race. Mike Murphy, a seasoned Republican strategist, noted that Haley's emergence is timely, especially as other GOP contenders have seen their popularity wane.

While Florida governor Ron DeSantis was initially a frontrunner among Trump alternatives, his position has been challenged by Haley's ascent. Haley's rise is attributed to her strong performances in recent debates and her expertise in international affairs, given her experience as a former U.N. ambassador. As the primary focus shifts to global issues, Haley's background provides her with a distinct advantage.

“I think she has more foreign relations experience than all of them put together,” Marks, a retired accountant from Windsor Heights, Iowa, told AP. “I don’t love everything she says, but there is nothing more important to me than foreign policy.”

Recent calls within the GOP have urged for a consolidation of the primary field. Many Republicans, including politicians and media outlets, are suggesting that other candidates should withdraw and rally behind Haley. Judd Gregg, a former US senator and New Hampshire Governor, recently endorsed Haley, stating that she is the right person to lead the party.

Former Illinois governor Bruce Rauner had been a DeSantis donor but is now contributing to Haley’s campaign for president and encouraging others to follow suit.

“She’s positive in the sense that she’s not out criticizing other people constantly or belittling people who disagree with her,” Rauner, a wealthy businessman who now lives in Florida, told AP. “She’s smart. She’s tough. She’s conservative. She’s a doer. And she’s what I call a happy warrior.”

DeSantis, recognizing Haley's growing influence, has shifted his strategy to counter her momentum. After the first two primary debates, Haley's popularity surged, particularly in New Hampshire, where she went from a 3% approval rating in August to a solid 19%, placing her in second place. Whit Ayres, a veteran Republican pollster, remarked on Haley's genuine rise, attributing it to her debate performances and her campaign trail presence.

However, challenges remain. While Haley is gaining traction, Trump still dominates the polls, leading by significant margins both nationally and in early primary states. Yet, Haley's progress has made it difficult for DeSantis to label the primary as just a contest between him and Trump. Haley has even surpassed DeSantis in some states, including New Hampshire and South Carolina.

Despite these advancements, some voters express concerns about the GOP's readiness to nominate a female candidate. Others worry about the division of the non-Trump vote among multiple candidates, which could pave the way for Trump's nomination.
