Church leaders across the spectrum have signaled that the current Trump war on Iran does not meet that threshold, reiterating a longstanding position summarized memorably by Pope John Paul II: “War is always a defeat for humanity.”

All this has not stopped the broader MAGA ecosystem from taking aim at the pontiff, with some supporters dismissing him as a “left-wing activist in vestments” and accusing the Vatican of aligning itself with political opponents of the administration. The charge — that the Pope is insufficiently pastoral and excessively political — is not new' Trump himself has echoed it.
