At least 3 people, including the alleged gunman, were killed and 14 others were injured after a shooting at a bar in Texas, authorities said.
The city's police chief, Lisa Davis, said at a news conference early on Sunday that her force received reports of a "male shooting" at Buford's, a popular beer garden in the city's entertainment district, Sky News reported.
When police arrived at the scene on West 6th Street, they found a man with a gun, and 3 officers "returned fire, killing the suspect".
Davis said they were lucky because of all the resources the police department had on nearby West 6th Street at the time, and as bars were closing, the resources "were able to rapidly move here".
Emergency medical services chief Robert Luckritz said 3 people were found dead at the scene, and the injured were taken to hospitals. Of those injured, 3 were in a critical condition.
Luckritz said they got a call "at 1.39am and within 57 seconds, the first paramedics and officers were on scene actively treating the patients".
Austin Mayor Kirk Watson praised the rapid response by police and rescuers, saying they "definitely saved lives".
Police did not release the identity of the gunman or make any comment on their motive.
