“Backtracking on her praise”: Perez Hilton calls out Chappell Roan for deleting Brigitte Bardot tribute
Perez Hilton reacts as a pop culture moment quickly turns into a broader conversation about accountability, history, and public learning. When Chappell Roan initially shared a tribute to Brigitte Bardot following the French icon’s death, the post blended admiration with artistic influence. Within hours, that praise became complicated, then controversial, and finally reversed.
The fact that Roan chose to remove the tribute was also noticeable. The shift attracted the online attention of audiences that were already sensitive to the way in which politicians dealt with political legacies. What that moment brought to light was that admiration can disintegrate swiftly as new details come to light and instantaneous commentary and screenshots that do not fade away.
Perez Hilton addressed the reversal in a December 29 blog post, sharing both of Roan’s Instagram stories and offering his take on the situation. He wrote: "Chappell Roan is backtracking on her praise for the late Brigitte Bardot."
Roan’s original story had reshared a Vogue France tribute, where she credited Bardot as a creative influence. She wrote: "She was my inspiration for red wine supernova. Rest in peace Ms. Bardot."
Soon after, Roan removed the post and followed up with a blunt clarification once she became aware of Bardot’s political history. She wrote: "Holy st i did not know all that insane st Ms. Bardot stood for obvs I do not condone this. very disappointing to learn."
Hilton added context by revisiting Bardot’s long record of controversial views, including multiple legal convictions for inciting racial hatred. He summarized that chapter of Bardot’s life by writing:
"While her early acting career positioned her as one of the world’s first sex symbols, Brigitte was later convicted in a court of law on multiple occasions throughout the ‘90s and 2000s on charges of inciting racial hatred — primarily targeting Muslims in Europe."
He also cited Bardot’s own words from an open letter related to animal slaughter, which included the statement: "They slaughter women and children, our monks, our civil servants, our tourists and our sheep, one day they’ll slaughter us, and we’ll have deserved it."
The situation underscores a growing cultural shift. Public figures are expected not only to honor art, but also to reckon with the beliefs behind it. Roan’s reversal may have sparked criticism, but it also reflected a willingness to listen, learn, and correct course in real time.
