South London high-rise tragedy: Neighbours heard 'screams' before man, woman and child fell to their deaths

A man, woman and child died after falling from a high-rise residential building in south London, with neighbours claiming they had heard repeated shouting and screaming in the weeks leading up to the tragedy.Emergency services were called to Churchyard Row in Elephant and Castle at about 7.30am on May 27 after reports that three people had fallen from height. Despite the efforts of paramedics, all three were pronounced dead at the scene.The deaths are currently being treated as unexplained by the Metropolitan Police, which has launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.According to Metro, residents living in the tower block told detectives they had heard frequent disturbances from within the building in the two weeks before the deaths.One neighbour said she reported hearing “shouting and screaming” on a regular basis before the incident, adding that the noises had stopped after Wednesday’s tragedy.In a statement quoted by Metro, the Metropolitan Police said officers, the London Ambulance Service, London’s Air Ambulance and the London Fire Brigade attended the scene following reports that people had fallen from height.“At the scene, three people – a man, a woman and a child – were found to have sadly died, despite resuscitation attempts by first responders,” the force said.Police confirmed there were no reports of any other injuries and that work was continuing to formally identify the victims.Specialist officers are supporting the next of kin, who have been informed of the deaths.The London Ambulance Service said its first paramedic arrived within four minutes of being alerted to the incident. Multiple emergency response teams, including a trauma team from London’s Air Ambulance, were dispatched to the scene.“Very sadly, despite the best efforts of our crews, three people were pronounced dead at the scene,” a spokesperson said.Residents of the building were later informed by management that police remained on site and that the property was safe.In an email seen by Metro, building managers told residents they understood the incident would be distressing but reassured them that authorities were handling the situation.The investigation remains ongoing as detectives work to establish the circumstances that led to the deaths.
