Dhaka city grinds to a halt ahead of Hasina verdict
Public transport in Dhaka remained scarce this morning as the capital braced for the verdict in the high-profile crimes against humanity case against former prime minister Sheikh Hasina.
With very few buses on the roads, public movement stayed noticeably thin. In usually packed areas like Moghbazar, Bangla Motor, Kakrail, Matsya Bhaban and the High Court zone, only scattered private vehicles were seen. Rickshaws dominated intersections, becoming the only reliable mode for those trying to travel amid heightened tension. Metro rail stations also recorded unusually low footfall, state news agency Daily Star reported.
Security has been significantly tightened across major intersections, with checkpoints, barricades and continuous patrols. The High Court area is especially fortified with police, BGB and other forces deployed in large numbers.
Commuters reported severe difficulty reaching workplaces and appointments due to the transport disruption. Many pointed to fears of unrest ahead of the verdict.
Meanwhile, outside the High Court’s main gate, families of July uprising victims gathered with banners and photographs, demanding capital punishment for Sheikh Hasina, calling it “justice long overdue.”
Law enforcement agencies say they are fully prepared to respond to any untoward situation.

Former inspector general of police Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun has been brought to the International Crimes Tribunal-1 premises ahead of today’s crucial verdict in the crimes against humanity case, which also names ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina as an accused.
A prison van, escorted by heavy police security, entered the tribunal compound around 9:05am, bringing Mamun — the lone arrestee and an approver in the case.
He is expected to be produced before the bench today.
The verdict will be delivered by the ICT-1 panel led by Justice Md Golam Mortuza Mozumder, state news agency Daily Star reported.
