South Africa
According to the World Population Review's Women Danger Index, South Africa poses the greatest threat to solo female travelers worldwide. A mere 25% of South African women feel secure walking unaccompanied at night, the lowest percentage globally.
Husband and wife journalists Asher and Lyric Fergusson studied and ranked the 50 most popular tourist countries to determine the most dangerous countries for female travelers.
Brazil
Brazil holds the second position among the most dangerous nations for women. Only 28% of Brazilian women reported feeling safe walking alone at night, and the country has the third-highest rate of intentional homicide against women.
Russia
Russia's second-highest rate of intentional homicide against women is the primary reason for its third-place ranking.
Mexico
Mexico ranks fourth overall among the most dangerous countries for women, as well as fourth for the percentage of women who feel safe walking at night and for intentional homicide against women.
Iran
Iran ranks fifth primarily due to its top ranking for the gender gap, which assesses disparities between men and women in economic participation, educational attainment, health, and political empowerment.
Dominican Republic
The Dominican Republic finds itself sixth on the list. It has the fifth-lowest percentage of women who feel safe walking alone at night, at 33%, and the fifth-highest rate of intentional homicide against women.
Egypt
Egypt is the seventh-most dangerous country for female travelers, with the fourth-highest global gender gap and the seventh-highest gender inequality.
Morocco
Morocco ranks eighth on the list. Nearly half of all women have suffered physical or sexual abuse from their intimate partners, marking the highest rate among the countries surveyed.
India
India, ranked as the ninth most dangerous country for women, sees 37.2% of its female population experiencing intimate partner violence. It also tops the list in the gender inequality index.
Thailand
Thailand is tenth on the list with 44% of women reporting intimate partner violence. Around 61% of women agreed that violence against women can be justified in specific situations.
