Mozambique's armed forces have announced the killing of Bonomade Machude Omar, the alleged leader of an Islamic State-linked insurgency in the Cabo Delgado province. Omar, also known as Abu Sulayfa Muhammad and Ibn Omar, has been leading operations since the outbreak of terrorism in Mozambique. The insurgency has resulted in thousands of deaths and disrupted multi-billion dollar energy projects. The US State Department had designated Omar as a "terrorist leader" in August 2021. French energy major TotalEnergies has stated that the security situation in Cabo Delgado has improved significantly but has not set a date for restarting its $20 billion LNG project.
