PUTRAJAYA: Kuala Lumpur has earned the right to stage the Global Indian Film Awards (GIFA) 2006, a three day Bollywood extravaganza, from August 31 later this year.
Malaysia won the bid after beating six other countries which were in fray.
A memorandum of understanding for staging the event was signed between Popcorn Entertainment Pvt Ltd, a company owned by Bollywood actor Suniel Shetty which created GIFA, and its Malaysian partner 'One Big Option' on Tuesday.

Bollywood actor Johny Lever, wife of Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister, Rosmah Mansor, Malaysian Minister of Tourism Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor and Malaysian diva Siti Nurhaliza were present at the ceremony.
Terming the event as an opportunity to promote tourism in Malaysia, Mansor, said, "with a global reach of over 2.6 billion television viewers, the event would put Malaysia on the map as one of the world's most favoured entertainment destinations in the world."
"We need to find new and creative ways of marketing Malaysia so as to raise our profile as a major tourist destination," she said.
"One of the ways to do this is to bring in celebrities from all over the world to experience Malaysia, be it for work or for leisure," said Rosmah, who is also a patron of GIFA.
Malaysian diva Siti Nurhaliza who will also perform at the show, has been chosen as one of the ambassadors for GIFA, Kuala Lumpur 2006.
