6.5 magnitude quake jolts Northern Molucca Sea off Indonesia

NEW DELHI: An earthquake of magnitude 6.5 hit the Northern Molucca Sea off Indonesia on Tuesday, the German Research Center for Geosciences (GFZ)said.

The quake struck at a depth of 10 kilometres (6.21 miles) GFZ said.

The agency has not issued a tsunami warning as the tremors are unlikely to trigger giant waves.

Last month, earthquake of magnitude 6.1 struck Indonesia's Java island, with its epicenter 132 km north of Tuban in East Java province.

Having a depth of 10 km, the tremors were strongly felt in East Java and its capital Surabaya.

Indonesia, a vast archipelago of more than 270 million people, is frequently hit by earthquakes and volcanic eruptions because of its location on the "Ring of Fire," an arc of volcanoes and fault lines in the Pacific Basin.
