Amnesty International chief to visit Bangladesh

A delegation of Amnesty International, led by secretary general Irene Khan, will be on a six-day visit to Bangladesh from Saturday to discuss human rights issues.

KOLKATA: A delegation of Amnesty International (AI), led by secretary general Irene Khan, will be on a six-day visit to Bangladesh from Saturday to discuss human rights issues with the government and civil society.
Pointing out that this was the first visit by an AI secretary general to Bangladesh, organisation sources said that it coincideds with the anniversary of the imposition of Emergency in that country.

"In its various meetings, the delegation will focus on the rule of law and institutional reforms necessary to promote and protect human rights in that country," the sources said.
Besides capital Dhaka, the delegation will also make a field visit to Rajshahi where it would meet survivors of human rights violation and members of the civil society, they said.
"Amnesty International will be meeting the Adviser on Foreign Affairs, Dr Iftekar Ahmed Chowdhury and Adviser of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Barrister Moinul Hosein," the sources said.
The delegation has also requested meetings with Chief Adviser Dr Fakhruddin Ahmed, Chief Justice Ruhul Amin and also the Chief of Army Staff, Gen Mueen Ahmed, the sources said.
