Nawaz Sharif's mother passes away in London

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s former prime minister Nawaz Sharif’s mother Begum Shamim Akhtar passed away in

London

on Sunday.


Shamim Akhtar, according to her family, was 89 years old, and suffering from Alzheimer's disease. She had developed a chronic chest infection in recent weeks.


According to media reports, her death certificate, with the cause of death stated on it, will be issued by the Westminster Magistrate Court’s Coroner, after which the body will be released.

The Sharif family will make arrangements to bring the body to Pakistan for burial once the death certificate is issued.

Senior PML-N leader Ataullah Tarar told local media that a request will be submitted to the court on Monday to allow the release of Shahbaz Sharif and his son Hamza Shahbaz on payroll so that they could attend the funeral.

Both father and son were arrested by the country’s anti-graft body, the National Accountability Bureau (NAB), on alleged corruption charges.
