North Korean state media reacted Wednesday to recent events in South Korea, describing the situation as “chaos.” The media focused on president Yoon Suk Yeol’s reported brief imposition of martial law.

“The shocking incident of the puppet Yoon Suk Yeol, who is facing impeachment and a governance crisis, suddenly declaring a martial law decree and unhesitatingly wielding the guns and knives of its fascist dictatorship wrought chaos across South Korea,” the state media commentary said.

The commentary also claimed international attention on the situation. “The international community is sternly watching, with assessments that the martial law incident exposed vulnerabilities in South Korean society,” it said.

North Korean commentators further speculated on the president’s political future. “Commentators described Yoon's abrupt declaration of martial law as a desperate move and that Yoon Suk Yeol's political life could face an early end.”

What is happening in South Korea?

The political landscape in South Korea entered a state of turmoil following the controversial declaration of martial law by president Yoon Suk Yeol on Tuesday. The declaration was quickly withdrawn following widespread protests and international criticism.

The protests, however, went on unabated with a motion in parliament on Saturday to impeach the president, which he managed to escape because his People's power party blocked the motion.

Massive demonstrations of 150,000 people erupted outside the National assembly during the impeachment vote. Protesters, undeterred by the freezing temperatures, chanted for Yoon's ouster and waved LED candles in a powerful display of dissent.

In a significant development, defence minister Kim Yong-hyun, who played a pivotal role in the implementation of the martial law order, was arrested on Sunday.

The repercussions of the martial law declaration on the political future of the president continue to unfold with the opposition planning another impeachment motion on Saturday.
