Israel said Thursday its spy chief will attend Gaza ceasefire talks and Hamas vowed to stop fighting if a truce is reached, as long-stalled efforts to end the war appeared to gain momentum.
Previous bids to stop the year-long war have failed, though the United States has voiced hope the killing of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar last week could serve as an opening for a deal.
A senior Hamas official told AFP that a delegation from the group's Doha-based leadership discussed "ideas and proposals" related to a Gaza truce with Egyptian officials in Cairo on Thursday.
"Hamas has expressed readiness to stop the fighting, but Israel must commit to a ceasefire, withdraw from the Gaza Strip, allow the return of displaced people, agree to a serious prisoner exchange deal and allow the entry of humanitarian aid into Gaza," the official said.
The talks in Cairo were part of Egypt's ongoing efforts to resume ceasefire negotiations, he added.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he welcomed Egypt's readiness to reach a deal "for the release of the hostages" still held by militants in Gaza.
After the Cairo meeting, Netanyahu directed the head of Israel's Mossad spy agency to leave for key mediator Qatar on Sunday to "advance a series of initiatives that are on the agenda," the prime minister's office said.

The Israeli military confirmed on Friday that it had struck a border crossing between Syria and Lebanon that it said was being used by Hezbollah to transfer weapons.
The air strike hit Hezbollah "infrastructure" at the Jousieh crossing in Lebanon's northern Bekaa area overnight, the Israeli military said in a statement.
It said Hezbollah "exploits the Jousieh civilian crossing, which is under the control of the Syrian regime and is operated by Syrian military security, to transfer weapons".
It added that the weapons are transferred from Syria to Lebanon by Hezbollah's 4400 Unit, which it said was responsible for the transportation of arms.
Lebanon's transport minister, Ali Hamieh, had earlier told AFP in Beirut that an Israeli strike had put the crossing "out of service".
The crossing, known as Qaa on the Lebanese side, is the second such gateway hit by the Israeli military this month.
It previously struck the Masnaa crossing further south, leaving it inoperable.

Hezbollah's Hashem Safieddine, widely seen as the successor to secretary general Hassan Nasrallah, was killed in an Israeli airstrike, the group confirmed on Wednesday. Safieddine had been leading Hezbollah alongside deputy secretary general Naim Qassem following Nasrallah's assassination and was expected to be officially named the group's leader. A relative of Nasrallah, Safieddine played a key role in overseeing Hezbollah's military operations as a member of its Jihad Council and managed its financial affairs as head of the executive council.
