Israel Hamas War Live Updates: Deadly shooting prompts Israel and Jordan to shut border crossings
Israel Hamas War Live: An American woman was killed by Israeli soldiers during a protest against settlements in the West Bank on Friday, according to a witness who spoke to The Associated Press. The shooting has prompted calls from Washington for an investigation into the incident. The US State Department confirmed the identity of the 26-year-old woman, born in Turkey, as Aysenur Ezgi Eygi. The White House expressed deep concern over the killing. Eygi was also a Turkish citizen, and the Turkish Foreign Ministry stated that they would make every effort to ensure that those responsible for her death are brought to justice. The Israeli military stated that they are investigating reports of troops killing a foreign national while firing at an "instigator of violent activity" during the protest. In other developments, Israeli forces seem to have withdrawn from three refugee camps after a military operation lasting more than a week, which resulted in dozens of deaths and significant destruction. Israel claims that the large-scale raids in the territory were intended to dismantle militant groups and prevent attacks, while Palestinians fear an escalation of the conflict in Gaza.According to the United Nations, the humanitarian situation in Gaza is "beyond catastrophic," with over 1 million Palestinians not receiving food rations in August and a 35% decrease in people receiving daily cooked meals. On Friday morning, health workers resumed vaccinating children against polio in the southern Gaza Strip as part of the second phase of a massive immunization campaign. The conflict began after Hamas launched a wide-scale attack into Israel on Oct. 7, resulting in the deaths of approximately 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and the abduction of around 250 individuals. In response, Israel's campaign has claimed the lives of more than 40,000 Palestinians, according to the Gaza Health Ministry, which does not distinguish between civilians and fighters in its casualty count.
