UK cabinet reshuffle: Suella Braverman sacked, ex-PM David Cameron made foreign secretary

Prime minister of the United Kingdom, Rishi Sunak, on Monday made some some big changes in the cabinet in a major reshuffle.

Prime minister Rishi Sunak fired his interior minister Suella Braverman, who accused police of being too lenient with pro-Palestinian protesters.

Rishi Sunak has named former prime minister David Cameron as the new foreign secretary, marking Cameron's return to active politics after seven years.

Downing Street has appointed James Cleverly, the former foreign secretary, as the new home secretary, and Cameron has been assigned Cleverly's previous role.

Sunak dismissed Braverman amid widespread criticism from colleagues, the Opposition, and the public regarding her comments in a newspaper article, where she criticized the police's perceived "biased" stance toward pro-Palestinian marches in the country.

David Cameron resigned as prime minister in 2016 following his inability to prevent Brexit, the UK's departure from the European Union. While the vote supporting Brexit occurred in 2016, the actual withdrawal from the bloc occurred in January 2020.

“Right-wing and nationalist protesters who engage in aggression are rightly met with a stern response yet pro-Palestinian mobs displaying almost identical behaviour are largely ignored, even when clearly breaking the law,” she wrote.

The article, in which Braverman accused London's Metropolitan Police of favoritism, was not approved by Downing Street, as stated by the government the following day.

Braverman had also compared pro-Palestinian protests with scenes seen in Northern Ireland during “the troubles”, a period of internal conflict from the 1960s to 1998.
