Theme of the anniversary celebrations

The 35th anniversary of the Berlin Wall’s fall was marked with the theme "Preserve Freedom!" amidst global tensions, notably in Gaza and Ukraine. Commemorating the Berlin Wall's fall

Construction of the Berlin Wall

The Berlin Wall was erected on August 13, 1961, by the East German government, aiming to prevent citizens from fleeing to West Berlin. Stretching 155 kilometres, the wall divided families, restricted movement, and became a stark symbol of the Cold War tensions between the Soviet and Western blocs. (Photo credit: AP)

Fortifications and guard towers

The Berlin Wall was heavily fortified, with nearly 300 watchtowers, barbed wire, anti-vehicle trenches, and armed guards instructed to shoot escapees. These formidable defences made crossing nearly impossible, turning the wall into one of the most dangerous barriers in the world during its 28-year existence. (Photo credit: AP)

Escape attempts and tunnels

Despite the risks, around 5,000 people successfully escaped from East to West Berlin. Ingenious methods included tunnels dug under the wall, hidden compartments in vehicles, and even hot air balloons. These escape stories highlighted East Germans' desperation for freedom and defiance of the oppressive regime. (Photo credit: AP)

Tribute to victims

A key event at the Berlin Wall Memorial paid tribute to the 140 people who died trying to escape the German Democratic Republic. This sombre moment reflected the harsh realities of life under the Wall and honoured those who lost their lives seeking freedom. (Photo credit: AP)

Iconic graffiti and art on the wall

The western side of the Berlin Wall became a canvas for artists and protesters, covered in graffiti and murals symbolising freedom, hope, and resistance. The artworks, some of which remain preserved today, transformed the wall from a barrier into a symbol of creative defiance against division and oppression. (Photo credit: AP)

Personal recollections from Berliners

Berliners shared personal memories of the Wall’s fall, one Berliner expressed disappointment over Germany’s current political turmoil. Despite this, she celebrated the historic moment when East Germans gained freedom to travel and the unity that followed. (Photo credit: AP)
