MH370 compensation cases: Legal proceedings begin in Beijing
A Beijing court has began hearings on compensation cases filed by families of Chinese passengers who lost their lives on Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370, which mysteriously disappeared almost a decade ago.
More than 40 families have filed lawsuits against Malaysia Airlines, the aircraft manufacturer Boeing, engine maker Rolls Royce and Allianz insurance group, state broadcaster CCTV said, reports AFP.
Here is all you want to know about the MH370 compensation cases:
MH370 Vanishing Act:
MH370 vanished on March 8, 2014, with 239 people on board, the majority being Chinese citizens. The flight, en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing, triggered an extensive search operation in the Indian Ocean, covering a 120,000-square-kilometer area. Despite the massive effort, only fragments of debris were discovered, and the search was eventually halted in January 2017.
Legal Focus on Compensation and Truth:
The families' legal actions primarily target compensation and the quest for truth regarding the mysterious disappearance of MH370. According to Zhang Qihuai, a lawyer quoted by CCTV, the litigation aims to address the hardships endured by the families over the past decade and seeks legal relief for the emotional toll caused by the lack of closure.
Pressure and Hope from MH370 Families:
Families of the missing passengers, who have faced the challenges of the last ten years without resolution, expressed a mix of emotions at the opening of the court hearings. Jiang Hui, whose mother was on MH370, described the event as a "turning point" and emphasized the need for legal relief. Some families have already reached settlements, while others are pursuing civil compensation ranging from 10 million to 80 million yuan, along with moral damages.
Ongoing Legal Proceedings and Unresolved Questions:
The court hearings are expected to continue until mid-December, as families seek answers and accountability.
