Unlike Ponting, Smith had decided a long time ago that he would give up the South African captaincy immediately after the World Cup. Eight years in the job and frequent run-ins with Cricket South Africa and the selectors and reports of groupism had obviously taken its toll. Hence, despite leading the team to fantastic series wins in Tests in England and Australia, he had decided to call it quits as skipper and hand over the reigns to Johan Botha. He led South Africa to a tight series win in ODIs at home and the side looked to be the most balanced that South Africa ever had in the World Cup, but they did what they do best in knock-out games. Choke against New Zealand in Mirpur in the quarterfinal to crash out.
