Injuries and the burden of leading a team that was seriously short of talent and class seemed to have caught up with the best left-arm-spinner in the world. The 0-4 drubbing at the hands of Bangladesh and New Zealand Cricket initiating an inquiry into the performance convinced Vettori it was time to move on. The 0-5 thrashing to India in the ODIs and the 0-1 loss in the Tests confirmed what many believed would happen soon. Vettori announced he would step down after the World Cup. New Zealand punched above their weight in the tournament to reach the semis and the timing was right to groom someone like Ross Taylor for the long haul.
