In a historic move, the US House of Representatives expelled New York Republican Congressman George Santos, making him the sixth lawmaker in history to face removal. Santos, under scrutiny for false claims about his past and numerous fraud allegations, abruptly left the Capitol, defiantly stating, "To hell with this place." This marks the first expulsion since 2002 and the third attempt. The House voted 311 to 114 in favour of expulsion, with bipartisan support. Santos faced 23 felonies, including wire fraud and money laundering, denying all allegations. The ethics committee found he exploited his candidacy for personal gain, using campaign funds for personal expenses like Botox, OnlyFans, and trips to the Hamptons. Expulsion votes, rare and requiring a two-thirds majority, raised concerns about setting a precedent. Santos' refusal to resign prompted the decisive vote, welcomed by constituents and seen by advocates as a victory for democracy and accountability.
