War rhetoric intensified after Mojtaba Khamenei issued his first statement since taking power, declaring that the Strait of Hormuz must remain closed as leverage against the United States and warning that attacks across the Middle East would continue. The Iranian leader also threatened U.S. military bases in the region, urging Washington to shut them down or face possible strikes, while vowing revenge for those killed in the war and promising Iran would extract compensation from its enemies. At the same time, Iran laid down three sweeping conditions to end the war with the United States and Israel - recognition of Iran’s “legitimate rights,” payment of war reparations and iron-clad guarantees against future attacks. Iranian leaders also warned the global energy market could face a massive shock, cautioning that crude prices could surge to $200 a barrel if the conflict drags on and shipping through the Gulf continues to be disrupted.Amid the escalating crisis, S. Jaishankar held three rounds of urgent talks with Iranian officials to secure India’s crucial oil supplies passing through the Strait of Hormuz. Even as an oil tanker reached Mumbai after navigating the tense corridor, several U.S.-linked vessels came under attack in the Gulf, highlighting how the conflict is rapidly turning the world’s most vital energy route into a dangerous flashpoint.
