“SHANTI Is A Cruel irony”: Tharoor Tears Into Modi Govt Over Nuclear Bill

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor on Wednesday criticised the government’s SHANTI Bill on nuclear energy, terming it a risky move towards privatised nuclear expansion without adequate safeguards. Speaking in the Lok Sabha, Tharoor said the pursuit of capital cannot override public safety, environmental protection and victim justice. He alleged that the bill is riddled with loopholes, grants excessive discretion to the Centre and weakens accountability. Tharoor questioned describing nuclear energy as “clean”, flagged risks of radioactive waste and accidents, and raised concerns over allowing private players across the entire nuclear chain. He also called the existing nuclear liability cap outdated and grossly inadequate, urging comprehensive reworking of the bill.
