Vote counting has begun in Pakistan and it appears cricketer-turned-politician Imran Khan may get to sit in the hot seat despite allegations of fraud and violence. Imran’s party is projected to win over 125 seats out of the 272 seats contested. But it will be an uphill task to maintain India-Pak relations if Imran does become Prime Minister. He is considered close to the Pakistani Army which would mean Imran is likely to play a puppet PM for them. ISI and the Pak army have been often accused of derailing peace talks with India. Imran is unlikely to push for peace talks as he has criticised Nawaz Sharif for trying to mend relations with India in the past. Imran’s party PTI may end up needing support of independents to form a government. This could mean he may be supported by MP’s backed by militant groups making it tougher to deal with India. Nawaz Sharif’s loss could be Imran and the Pak Army’s gain, but more importantly, both India and Pakistan may end up on the losing side due to this.
