Prime Minister Narendra Modi was named as one of the laureates of the 2018 UN Champions of the Earth award. This was in recognition of India’s pledge to eliminate all single-use plastics by 2022. India generates over 25,000 tonnes of plastic every day of which nearly 40% remains uncollected. This leads to pollution, clogged sewage and destroys marine life. Ironically, India's plastic industry is growing at a compounded rate of 10%. As per FICCI, almost 43% of India's plastics are single-use which India has pledged to eliminate in the next four years. So next time you buy a bottle of packaged water, remember it will take over 400 years for it to decompose.
